Built in 1934 to house the Washington State Highway Department, the Newhouse Building was originally named the Highway Building. Over the years, the building has changed names three times. The Washington State Highway Department occupied the building from 1934 until 1950. From 1950 through 1954 it was called the Labor and Industries Building. By the early 1960s, the name had changed again to the Institutions Building.
The name changed for the final time on Sept. 17, 1998. In honor of former State Senator Irv Newhouse's contributions to the State of Washington, the building was formally named the Irv Newhouse Building.
