Daily Docket — Wednesday, March 15

Here are some updates you may have missed.

Today, the North Carolina Supreme Court reheard Holmes v. Moore, a case that previously blocked a law that restricted the types of acceptable photo IDs to vote in the state. The pro-voting side argued the court’s prior decision in the case was rightly decided. Find the full courtroom summary here. [link removed]

Also today, the Connecticut Government Administration and Elections Committee proposed Senate Bill 1226, An Act Concerning State Voting Rights In Recognition Of John R. Lewis. The heart of S.B. 1226, a preclearance requirement, would mirror the now-defunct Section 5 of the federal Voting Rights Act (VRA). [link removed]

On Monday, a retiree advocacy group moved to intervene in a lawsuit brought by conservative groups seeking stricter signature matching rules for mail-in ballots in Arizona. The group argues that the lawsuit would put voters at a “higher risk of disenfranchisement.” [link removed]

Here’s what to expect coming up.

Tomorrow on Democracy Docket, we take a look at states like Connecticut that have enacted state-level versions of the federal VRA now that the federal one has been weakened by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Also tomorrow, amicus briefs in the election contest filed by failed gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake (R) are due to the Arizona Supreme Court. The briefs will present arguments as to whether or not the state’s highest court should take up her contest. [link removed]
