I just turned 97. Happy birthday to me!
I’m celebrating with family and friends, but I wanted to send you a quick note.
In 97 years, I’ve had plenty of ups and downs. And so has our country. And it’s because of what is happening to our country right now that I believe my most important accomplishment was founding People For the American Way.
Here’s what I mean. For almost 40 years, People For the American Way has been defending our constitutional rights and working to build a country that makes the “blessings of liberty” available to everyone. We want to make “We, the people” mean “ALL the people.”
Trump and Trumpism are twisting, distorting, and corrupting the American Way. For the sake of power – and the ability to abuse that power to plunder – he and his allies will destroy democracy itself. It is breaking my heart. And it is making me mad.
They’ve shown that they’ll do anything to hold on to power. Which is why we have to use every bit of our individual and collective power to fight back.
Thanks to you and so many others, People For the American Way has been growing stronger. We are using every tool available to us to fight for democracy and the protection of voting rights, equality for LGBTQ Americans, the freedom to worship as we want or not at all, and courts that protect every American and not just the most powerful ones.
So, on my 97th birthday, I’m writing to you to ask that you tap into your own power to challenge the power of those who have proven that they don’t deserve it.
