Ronald Reagan so wisely said that “freedom is a fragile thing, never more than one generation away from extinction.”
But it is the second half of that famous quote that hits home for me:
We don’t “pass” freedom “to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same.”
I am convinced that America is unstoppable when we are fully committed to freedom, equality, and unwavering faith in our founding principles. That belief – and my faith in God – got me through West Point. It sustained me on the front lines of the Cold War and fighting alongside our intelligence warriors as the director of the CIA. And it allowed me to stare down some of our toughest and most committed enemies as the Secretary of State.
I’ve learned tough lessons on the frontline in the fight for freedom: principles matter, character is destiny, and when times get tough, faith in the mission and competence in executing it will get us through.
