If we don’t learn from history, we’ll be doomed to repeat it.

John,

Some Republicans have made it abundantly clear that they would rather work our farmlands to death than rebuild a healthier ecosystem.

Congressional Republicans like Chuck Grassley have gone on tirades about how the Farm Bill’s conservation programs risk taking too much farmland out of production in the name of climate change. But politicians like Senator Grassley seem to have forgotten why the Farm Bill was enacted in the first place: to help struggling farms and farmers navigate their way out of the 1930s Dust Bowl.

In 2023, we’re combatting similar factors that led to the devastating Dust Bowl at an exacerbated rate thanks to climate change — extended drought, unusually high temperatures, overfarming, and the resulting wind erosion that’s hurting our soil.

The Farm Bill’s conservation programs won’t just protect the land and soil our farms are on, John. They’ll deliver critical support to farmers on the frontlines of climate change — but we need your help to make sure these programs make it past anti-climate politicians like Chuck Grassley.

If we don’t learn from history, we’ll be doomed to repeat it — and thanks to Republicans who oppose these conservation programs, we’re on a speeding bullet train straight back to the Dust Bowl.

In order to protect our safe and abundant food supply, invigorate rural communities, and help farmers take care of the environment as they continue to provide food, feed, fuel, and fiber to the world, we have to make sure these conservation programs make it into the 2023 Farm Bill.

SEEC’s Climate and Agriculture Task Force — led by Reps. Chellie Pingree (Maine) and Kim Schrier (Washington) — are working to ensure this Farm Bill provides farmers with the resources they need to address the climate crisis, but the GOP majority is doing everything they can to derail our progress. Please rush a contribution of any amount so our Members can keep up the fight for our farmers and for climate action.
