On Tuesday the House hosted a bipartisan policy committee public hearing on the Norfolk Southern train derailment in East Palestine to discuss current health and economic impacts on Pennsylvanians and goals moving forward. Members of the committee heard from state and local response teams involved in the aftermath of the derailment, asking them their experience and what, if anything, could be done in preparation of future emergency situations. Notably, the director of Emergency Services for Beaver County, Eric Brewer, requested increased support for Emergency Management that includes updating laws, additional funding and more staff. This will of course be kept in mind during the upcoming budget hearings that begin next week.
The budget hearings are starting with the Department of Education and will continue with State-Related Universities and Community Colleges. You can watch the hearings live at pahouse.com/live or follow me on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to keep updated. I will also send updates here, in my weekly emails.
