This Women’s History Month, and every month, we honor women’s fundamental role in our movements for a voice at work, a healthy environment, and dignified lives for all people. From the women mill workers of Lowell ([link removed]) , to racial and economic justice leader Melnea Cass ([link removed]) , to the many organizers leading our movements today, women have been fundamental to winning a better Massachusetts for working people.

MBTA riders need a low-income fare NOW!
The Public Transit Public Good coalition is encouraged that Governor Healey has included $5 million in her budget to advance a low-income fare at the MBTA ([link removed]) . This funding proposal is an important step forward in creating a public transit system that is accessible to all, regardless of people’s income level.
For too many Massachusetts residents, the cost of public transit is a significant financial burden, making it difficult to access basic necessities such as school, doctor appointments, grocery shopping, etc. A low-income fare will provide people with a more affordable option for transportation, allowing them to save money and improve their quality of life. By including funding for a low-income fare program in her budget, Governor Healey is helping us take the next steps to create a more safe, equitable, and accessible transportation system for all riders. We look forward to working with Governor Healey, legislators, and MBTA officials to ensure a low-income fare is available to qualified riders on all modes.

Introducing our new staff member, Helen Barrios
Our team is expanding! Recently, Care That Works and Building Pathways welcomed Helen Barrios, the new Care That Works Program Coordinator.
Helen Barrios is a first-generation Guatemalan with a passion for community work. She brings her background in the building trades, as well as her extensive experience with young children as a Kindergarten Teacher, Nanny, and Au Pair, to our team. As our new Care That Works Program Coordinator, Helen will help us expand outreach to increase the number of families and providers offering early morning child care, a lack of which can often be a barrier to those looking to enter the trades.
We are excited to welcome Helen, and we look forward to collaborating with her to further our shared mission of diversifying the union building trades and making them a more accessible career path.

Join Care That Works (CTW) on Saturday, March 25, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. for the Job and Child Care Fair ([link removed]) at the Reggie Lewis Center in Roxbury! CTW presents an event to help parents learn about careers in the union construction trades and find flexible child care options while giving child care providers an opportunity to explore union career opportunities. All attendees can learn about the CTW Pilot program that connects parents and providers to accommodate families who work in the union construction trades and those who want to gain access to careers in those industries.
All job seekers are welcome to join us at any time during the event to meet tabling union employers, experienced tradeswomen, and childcare providers. This is a free and family-friendly event; children are welcome.

On International Women’s Day, we were thrilled to join the Greater Boston Labor Council, leaders, and organizers in the economic, racial, and social justice movements to build power and solidarity around a shared longer-term women’s economic agenda. By addressing the challenges faced by women, we can create a stronger, more inclusive economy that benefits everyone.
GreenRoots: Celebrating the work of Maria Belen Power
This month, we celebrated the work of GreenRoots’ Associate Executive Director María Belén Power as she transitions into her new role as Undersecretary of Environmental Justice & Equity with the Healey Administration! Her work with GreenRoots has been instrumental in advancing environmental justice in Greater Boston and beyond. We honor her accomplishments and wish her continued success on her journey.
Speak out on rent control
Working-class Boston showed up in full force to testify with tenants, City Life / Vida Urbana, Homes for All Massachusetts, Chinese Progressive Association, and more as they spoke out in support of rent control legislation! Over 280 testimonials were submitted in support of the legislation, and testimonies were given in Mandarin, Cantonese, Haitian Creole, Spanish, and English.
