John—
As you probably know, gun violence has been on the rise, with nearly 50,000 Americans dying from firearms in 2021. We often talk about knowing the solutions but needing leaders who will implement them—President Biden did just that.
Yesterday, less than a year after signing the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, President Biden announced a suite of new executive actions designed to save lives from gun violence.
Among other improvements, the new executive actions will help:
- Expand background checks by clarifying who counts as a gun dealer and must conduct checks on prospective gun buyers.
- Implement extreme risk protection order laws by partnering with healthcare providers, educators, law enforcement, and other community leaders to encourage their use.
- Promote the safe storage of firearms through federal campaigns and other efforts.
- Hold the gun industry accountable by analyzing its marketing practices and releasing records of gun store inspections.
- Ensure the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act is implemented correctly, including through the release of information about its early impacts.
- Support the families of victims and gun violence survivors by exploring the creation of a FEMA-like agency to respond to mass shootings.
Giffords Law Center has been crafting and presenting these policies and more to the Biden administration since the 2020 election. Our attorneys worked closely with advisors and partners to identify the most effective solutions possible through the executive branch—something that could only happen thanks to the unwavering support of people like you.
We are incredibly thankful to President Biden for showing the courage to fight this country’s gun violence epidemic. Lives will be saved because of this, and as a Giffords Law Center supporter you should be proud of helping make that happen.
There’s more to come—and we’re so grateful to have you right there with us.
With courage,
Lindsay
