Folks, we have to be honest.
Pestering you with fundraising emails this early in an election cycle is not fun.
We know there are plenty of other things you’d like to read than a fundraising plea.
Congressman Ruiz knows this – reaching out like this to ask you to donate is never his favorite thing to do.
And it’s honestly a struggle to convey the sense of urgency that gets hard-working folks like you to click donate in March of a non-election year.
But the unfortunate truth is that if we don’t stay on track with our fundraising targets, even this far out from Election Day, we’ll find ourselves in the House Minority once again.
So before we explain a little more about what your donation today will mean, can we count on you to chip in just $5 right now and boost our efforts to retake the House Majority? »
If there’s anyone to blame for fundraising emails like this one, it’s the conservative justices of the Supreme Court who opened the floodgates on campaign finance, effectively allowing unlimited campaign contributions in the now infamous Citizens United case.
Because of that ruling, individual House races will routinely cost upwards of $5 million dollars.
This means conservatively speaking, our campaign has to raise about $100,000 each month to stay competitive with our GOP opponents.
Now look, team, our Democratic caucus is working tirelessly to rewrite our campaign finance laws so that the rich and powerful don’t decide elections in smoke-filled backrooms.
But we can’t do that when dark money Republicans run the show in Washington. So we need to get to work now and do everything we can to flip the House, and usher in a new era with less dark money influence, and fewer anxiety-inducing campaign emails.
And we know it’s ironic to now ask you to chip in a few bucks, but our grassroots supporters are the strongest weapon we have in the fight against dark-money GOP mega-donors, so we’re asking for you to step up. »
