The Washington Post: McCarthy defends giving Tucker Carlson access to Jan. 6 video
John, Kevin McCarthy is attempting to defend his decision to give Tucker Carlson access to more than 40,000 hours of security video from the U.S. Capitol when it was attacked on January 6.
McCarthy actually claimed he gave the footage to the Fox News host in the name of transparency and accountability.
John, we know a thing or two about transparency and accountability – we fight for it day in and day out at CREW – and we know that providing this footage to Tucker Carlson is FAR from providing transparency and accountability.
Tucker Carlson is using this footage to spread lies and misinformation about the January 6th on the Capitol. And we have to refute those lies with the truth.

Carlson is picking and choosing which footage from the January 6th attacks to show his viewers so that he can shape the narrative. So that he can claim insurrectionists are “tourists” who “revere the Capitol.”
Normal tourist visits don’t result in millions of dollars worth of damage. Normal tourist visits don’t lead to grave injuries and multiple deaths. Normal tourist visits don’t involve canisters of bear spray or chants of “hang Mike Pence.”
Carlson’s portrayal of the attack on the Capitol is dishonest, and it is setting the stage for Trump and other orchestrators of January 6th to escape accountability — and potentially to incite similar violent attacks on democracy in the future.
We can’t let that happen.
CREW is pushing back against Carlson’s distortions and downplaying of the insurrection. CREW is holding insurrectionists accountable. And we need your help to continue that work.
