In his Morning Meeting column on Tuesday, Poynter senior faculty Al Tompkins walks readers through the background and details that led to the Silicon Valley Bank collapse, and reminds us how national news is really local news.
He suggests that journalists take a look at the health of community banks, which typically have less than $10 billion in assets, tend to focus on smaller areas and often serve specialized needs (like farming).
“Community banks also can offer loans to individuals who might not qualify for loans with big banks that do not know the individual or business seeking a loan,” Al wrote. “Community banks are often important corporate community citizens in ways big banks are not.”
It’s a great reminder that financial industry regulations aren’t about some far-away anonymous suits, but our neighbors, coworkers and friends. |

Two online cohorts: July 10-31 and Nov. 6-27, 2023
The popularity of our Lead With Influence program means we’re offering it twice more in 2023 to two specific groups. Our July session is designed for anyone, while the November session is reserved for women and nonbinary leaders.
This interactive, virtual training is for leaders who manage big responsibilities — such as processes, products or platforms — without direct reports.
Both cohorts meet online for four hours a week on Mondays during their session month.
Apply by June 2 for the general group and by Oct. 13 for the women and nonbinary cohort.
Cost: $600. |
