Hi John,

You know how everyone always says there are too few rich people in American politics? Well, Texas Republicans have found yet another way to make sure qualified candidates can’t afford to run.

House Bill 232 would raise the filing fee to run for the Texas House … and not just by a little. The #TxLege wants to raise the filing fee more than 60% from $750 to $1,250!

It’s hard enough for ordinary Texans to run for office. The only point of HB232 is to make it more difficult. Democracy is about expanding access to government, not limiting it. So we need your help to stop this anti-democratic bill.

The public hearing on HB232 is this Thursday, March 16th @ 10:30AM before the House Elections Committee.

Call the House Elections Committee members now and deliver a clear message: Don’t put up any more barriers to good candidates running for office!

We have two more calls to action just below, and we hope you’ll keep joining us in standing up against Texas Republicans and their attacks on our democracy and our rights.

Post-Pregnancy Healthcare

We have a real opportunity to expand post-pregnancy healthcare here in Texas — but we've got to act now.

This Thursday, March 16th @ 8AM, the House Select Committee on Healthcare Reform is holding a hearing on House Bill 12, which would expand (👍) Medicaid coverage post-pregnancy to 12 months.

Continued medical care for the mother after pregnancy helps everyone — baby, family, and (of course) momma.

HB12 has bipartisan support, but we still need YOUR voice to make sure this bill passes the committee vote. Can you call the Select Committee members and let them know you support expanding post-pregnancy healthcare?

Redistricting

The biggest blow to Texans’ voting rights isn’t found in the election laws. It’s in the political maps.

The Texas GOP has gerrymandered our state’s electoral districts to suppress our voices.

Unfairly drawn electoral districts remove voters’ choices, undermine public opinion, and make government less responsive and less respected. In the 2021 emergency session, #TxLege made the districts for Texas Senate elections even more unfair.

On Thursday, March 16th @ 9AM, the Senate Special Committee on Redistricting is meeting to consider Senate Bill 375, which would set in stone the gerrymandered Texas Senate maps drawn during the 2021 emergency session.

Did you lose a Senator who understood and represented your community? Do the new maps divide a community of interest, like a town, neighborhood, or school attendance boundary in your area? Did you find the 2021 process impossible to understand?

Any member of the public can let the Special Committee know what they think about the 2021 maps at this link. Make sure you let them know that Texans deserve fair maps drawn through a transparent process.
