[1]U.S. Senator Chris Murphy

Hey there, if you’ll bear with me, I want to be totally, completely transparent with you today.

If your inbox is anything like mine, this week is around the time that you find it filled with people asking you to donate to a “mid-month fundraising deadline.” Sound familiar?

Well, here’s the truth: It’s a lie. There is no “mid-month fundraising deadline”. The only deadline this quarter for federal candidates is the FEC deadline on March 31.

I care about my donors - it’s a big deal to make a donation to a Senator or a candidate for Congress. So I’m just not going to gum up your inbox with outrageous and false messages to make a quick buck. Too many politicians forget there are real humans on the other side of these emails. Treating this merely like a transactional relationship is not how we build healthy long-term movements.

So there’s no deadline this week, but maybe deadlines isn’t the only thing that drives you to donate to a candidate that you believe in. If that’s true, please consider making a donation of whatever you can spare to my re-election today. It’d mean a lot to me, and it’d go a long way toward the goals we need to hit hold this seat and our Senate majority.

The status quo of political fundraising sucks, and at some point, it’s going to take action from those of us in Congress to change it. If it was up to me, we would pass legislation that publicly funds elections. But until then, I’m going to raise money the right way. And that means being honest with you about how our campaigns really work.

There isn’t a mid-month FEC deadline. I guess if I pretended there was, maybe I could raise more money. Or, maybe the best way to raise money is to be transparent about which deadlines matter (the end of quarter deadlines) and which ones are made up. Maybe I can actually raise more money by refusing to use scams to scare people into giving.

So if you agree, please consider contributing anything that makes sense to you to help me win re-election. The donation itself is just as important as the amount because it sends a powerful message that a lot of people want to support this kind of transparency from campaigns.

Thank you for being part of our movement. I’m grateful to know that you’re with me for the tough fights ahead.

Every best wish,
