Moody’s Investor Service Downgrades US Banking System to “Negative” Following Worst Bank Failure Since 2008
Townhall: Following the biggest bank failure since the financial crisis of 2008, Moody’s Investor Service has downgraded its rating of the U.S. banking system in the latest sign that President Biden’s Monday morning attempt to assuage concerns went over like a lead balloon. Moody’s — one of three major rating entities — downgraded its outlook for the U.S. banking system from “stable” to “negative” on Tuesday morning “to reflect the rapid deterioration in the operating environment following deposit runs at Silicon Valley Bank (SVB), Silvergate Bank, and Signature Bank (SNY) and the failures of SVB and SNY,” Moody’s explained ( Townhall). CNBC: Rates rose as the Federal Reserve battled an inflation surge that took prices to their highest levels in more than 40 years. Moody’s said it expects the Fed to continue hiking. The firm said it expects the U.S. economy to fall into recession later this year, further pressuring the industry ( CNBC).

Vermont Christian School Banned from Participating in Future Tournaments
National Review: A Christian school has been excluded from competing in future tournaments sanctioned by the Vermont Principals’ Association (VPA) after its girls basketball team forfeited a match against an opposing team that includes a male player who identifies as a girl. The VPA, the governing body overseeing high school sports in Vermont, ruled that the Mid Vermont Christian School (MVCS) can no longer participate in any VPA-sponsored competitions across all sports because the school violated two human-rights policies concerning “gender identity” and “commitment to racial, gender-fair, and disability awareness” ( National Review).Townhall: The issue of male athletes who believe that they are transgender infiltrating women’s sports has made international headlines. Last month, world-renowned surfer Bethany Hamilton, who the movie “Soul Surfer” is based on, said that she would no longer be competing in professional surfing if the World Surf League moved forward with its inclusive transgender policy ( Townhall).

Biden Signs Executive Order Enhancing Background Checks, Red Flag Laws for Gun Buyers
Reuters: U.S. President Joe Biden issued an executive order on Tuesday that reinforced background checks for gun buyers in what the White House is promoting as the most comprehensive policy the president can enact without Congress. The order aims to strengthen federal support for red flag laws intended to stop gun sales to people deemed dangerous. Such measures have been passed by 19 states and the District of Columbia. The Biden administration has also taken previous executive action seeking to reduce gun violence ( Reuters). National Review: With the order, the Biden administration admits it aims to get the U.S. as close as possible to adopting universal background checks without having to go through the normal legislative process. Use of red flag laws, which prohibit individuals who pose a threat to themselves or others from obtaining a firearm, will ramp up under the order. Biden will direct members of his Cabinet to “encourage effective use of extreme risk protection orders, including by partnering with law enforcement, health care providers, educators, and other community leaders” ( National Review).

Treasury Department Offers House Oversight Committee Reports on Hunter Biden
National Review: The Treasury Department has agreed to provide the House Oversight Committee with suspicious-activity reports for the Biden family and their associates’ business transactions, committee chairman James Comer (R., Ky.) announced on Tuesday. Comer said in a statement to National Review that the department’s decision to share the reports — which financial institutions are required to file when they detect unusual transactions that could signal illegal activity — comes after Treasury officials previously spent two months “dragging their feet” ( National Review). Daily Wire: Democrats in Congress vociferously oppose the probes run by Republicans into the Biden family, including the president’s brothers and his son, Hunter Biden, whose financial dealings are also being scrutinized by federal prosecutors ( Daily Wire) .

Ohio Sues Norfolk Southern Railway for Damages After Train Derailment
NBC: The Ohio Attorney General’s office filed a complaint against Norfolk Southern Railway in federal court on Tuesday, alleging that the company violated hazardous waste and water quality laws and was negligent for causing the train derailment and toxic chemical releases last month in East Palestine, Ohio. The lawsuit adds to the railway’s legal woes in the wake of the train derailment and subsequent release of toxic chemicals, which the complaint says included more than 1 million gallons of hazardous materials. The suit asks the court to require that company pay for future environmental monitoring, and reimburse the state for costs associated with its response and for remediation, among other concerns ( NBC). Washington Post: Local and state authorities are tallying the amount of money that Ohio has spent since the derailment, making it too soon to put a number to the lawsuit. The Environmental Protection Agency is enforcing Norfolk Southern’s cleanup and is monitoring the effects of the derailment and chemical release ( Washington Post).

North Korea Fires Ballistic Missiles in Retaliation to Joint Drills Between US, South Korea
Bloomberg: North Korea fired two short-range ballistic missiles Tuesday toward waters off its east coast after threatening the US to turn the Pacific Ocean into a “firing range” if it holds joint military drills with South Korea. North Korea said it fired two cruise missiles from a submarine on Sunday and issued a new threat to “mercilessly punish” the US over the drills. While North Korea is not barred by United Nations resolutions from cruise missile tests, the launch from a submarine of the rockets would mark a new step in the state’s ability to potentially deliver a nuclear weapon that could hit US bases in South Korea and Japan ( Bloomberg). Reuters: South Korean and American forces began 11 days of joint drills, dubbed “Freedom Shield 23,” on Monday, which will be held on a scale not seen since 2017 to counter the North’s growing threats. North Korea has long bristled at the allies’ drills as a rehearsal for invasion. North Korea’s foreign ministry has denounced the planned meeting as “the most intensive expression” of U.S. “hostile policy” against Pyongyang, and warned it will take “the toughest counteraction” ( Reuters).

Drew Barrymore Kneels Before Trans Person During Interview on Her Show
Townhall: In just the last few years, Democrats’ idol worshipping has been on display in the case of George Floyd, Dr. Anthony Fauci, and the transgender movement as a whole. We’re seeing the group that on the one hand demands equal rights for women put biological men on pedestals, giving multiple women’s awards to them, allowing them to dominate women in sports, and attacking anyone who dares to speak out. But according to some critics, the idol worship has reached a new low thanks to actress, producer and talk show host Drew Barrymore ( Townhall). Charlie Kirk: Drew Barrymore kneels for Dylan Mulvaney, a man pretending to be a woman, in one of the most bizarre “interviews” you will ever see ( Twitter). Daily Caller: Mulvaney rose to fame through TikTok as an activist and has been invited to the White House to speak about the issue.
