Every year over 5,000 people are injured or killed by gun violence in North Carolina.
This morning, in a historic step toward a safer state for all North Carolinians, Governor Roy Cooper officially announced the creation of the Statewide Office of Violence Prevention, the FIRST statewide office of violence prevention in the South.
A comprehensive approach to ending gun violence means that all-of-government and the community must be meaningfully invested in the solutions needed by those closest to the pain, not just police. The Statewide Office of Violence Prevention will be positioned to do that important work, developing long term strategies to provide resources for those impacted by gun violence and influence policy that can save lives.

With so many lives lost and traumatized by gun violence, it's often hard to celebrate progress, but this is a moment we should all appreciate as it will save countless lives across North Carolina for years to come.
Thank you to all that fought for this moment, especially our partners at North Carolinians Against Gun Violence, NC Alliance of Black Elected Officials, John Hopkins, NAACP-Raleigh and to Governor Cooper for taking this bold step to address the largest crisis impacting Black and Brown communities.
Onward,
Gregory Jackson
Executive Director, Community Justice
