John, according to recent reporting, the Supreme Court seems poised to overturn President Biden’s plan to provide relief to thousands of Americans with student loan debt.
At times like this, we’re reminded of what A.G. Holder said after the Supreme Court handed down rulings gutting key provisions of the Voting Rights Act, eliminating reproductive rights, and more:
“Make no mistake, Republicans have made it their goal for decades to turn our nation’s highest tribunal into another political tool to force their unpopular, minority policies onto the people.”

He’s right. For years, the GOP stacked courts with conservative justices who they believed would advance their far-right agenda. This tactic has been paying off – and now, Republicans are working to install judges who they think will rubber stamp their agenda in state courts across the country.
Their next target is an upcoming state supreme court race in Wisconsin, which POLITICO called “the biggest election of 2023,” because it could have far-reaching impacts on abortion access, voting rights, and even the 2024 presidential contest.
Right-wing activists have already started pouring cash into Wisconsin, and experts predict this could become the most expensive state supreme court contest in U.S. history.
