A NOTE FROM CHRISSY

This Congress - the 118th - got off to a rocky start with the election for Speaker taking not one…not two…but 15 rounds of voting. The only time this process took longer was leading up to the Civil War. The business of forming committees took most of January, but it’s finally all sorted out. I’m excited to continue serving on the House Armed Services Committee where I focus on the needs of military families, nuclear weapons, and missile defense. I’m also proud to have earned an appointment to the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence which oversees the different branches of the U.S. intelligence community. AKA, spy stuff. :-)

In February, my team and I participated in a two-day staff retreat in beautiful, historic Southern Chester County, held our 70th town hall, kicked off the Bipartisan Paid Family Leave Working Group, published an op-ed on the need for reforms to how Presidents and members of Congress handle classified material, and more.

Thank you for being part of this journey to make our communities and our country better. Thank you for the honor of serving our community.

70th Town Hall: Resources at our Fingertips

I was delighted to have community members join me at a town hall - our 70th! - at Reading’s Miller Center for the Arts. These meetings offer an important opportunity to listen to one another and learn about the excellent resources in our community. I am also profoundly grateful to our special guests – Dr. Susan Looney, Mayor Eddie Moran, Michael Toledo, Anne Fisher, and Dr. Michael Stauffer – for the many ways they support and improve the livelihoods of our residents.

Renewing the fight for Paid Family Leave

Rep. Stephanie Bice and I sat down with CNN’s Dana Bash to discuss our bipartisan working group on paid family leave. The lack of federal paid family leave is forcing mothers out of the workforce, asking them to choose between being a parent and staying in a job they love. That’s what happened to me when I was a young Air Force lieutenant and pregnant with my first child. Fixing this is important to me and it’s personal. Not only will paid family leave meet the modern needs of businesses, workers, and families alike, but it also delivers on our promise, by both Republicans and Democrats, to build stronger communities.

State of the Union

President Biden gave his second State of the Union address and both took a victory lap and offered his vision for the future. Did you know that members of Congress are able to take one guest? My guest was Jessica Goldenberg, a local mom who didn’t get much leave and had to resign her job shortly after giving birth. You can imagine how thrilled I was to hear the President prioritize paid family leave in his address. Together we will get this done.

Much lies ahead in our work to bring a better future for all of us. Rest assured that we will continue to fight for you. But in the meantime, I love to hear from community members about how our office has helped resolve their issues or how we can best serve folks like you. Remember, our website is always a resource for you and your family. As always, we invite you to call one of our offices or fill out our contact form. We're all in this together.
