Friend,
Yesterday, the Biden administration officially approved the Willow Project, ConocoPhillips' massive oil drilling expansion in Alaska's Western Arctic.
I won't mince words. This is an unacceptable departure from President Biden's climate and environmental justice commitments. He ran and won on the most ambitious climate agenda in U.S. history—yet now, his administration has approved one of the largest fossil fuel projects proposed on public lands.
Make no mistake: This decision sells out frontline communities to Big Polluters. Alaska Native communities living alongside this vital Arctic ecosystem will be the ones to bear the burden of the ensuing toxic fossil fuel pollution.
President Biden must get back on track to deliver on his commitments to the American people—and find a way to ensure dangerous fossil fuel projects on public lands are never approved again under his watch. Our policy team details three ways the Biden administration and Congress can stop future climate disasters like Willow in our latest blog post.
While this isn't the outcome we wanted, I'm still proud of everything we accomplished. Thanks to your advocacy, countless more people are aware of Willow and are primed to fight against the next dangerous project Big Polluters propose. This isn't the first setback in our fight for our clean energy future, and it won't be the last. But all the while, our grassroots power is growing. We will win the future we deserve.
Onward,
