ANNOUNCEMENT

PEAK is Platinum Again

PEAK has again earned Guidestar’s Platinum Seal of Transparency, joining the fewer than one percent of nonprofits with Guidestar profiles at the Platinum level who are demonstrating a commitment to transparency and sharing results.

Private foundations can earn seals too! Congratulations if your organization is among them and, if not, we challenge you to spur the change we want to see in having more funders commit to transparency.

PEAK Peer Network Spotlight

PEAK offers members diverse peer spaces for learning, sharing, and evolving in our thriving chapters and peer groups, which include caucuses, affinity groups, communities of practice, and working groups. Each month, we’ll showcase the meaningful programming and networking taking place in these volunteer-led spaces.

In late February, PEAK Minnesota led a discussion on how participatory grantmaking practices, like shared gifting and community voting to award grants, can help foundations better put their values into action. During this session, Noelle Harden, a University of Minnesota Extension educator, shared how some participatory grantmaking methods can advance democracy, equity, and other core values in foundation work.

And in early March, PEAK New England led their own discussion about participatory grantmaking and general operating grants. Two presenters, Dorot Foundation Senior Director of Programs and Strategy Naomi Orensten and Phīla Giving Chief Operating Officer Lauren Janus, shared real-life examples of how some foundations are using these methods in their grantmaking practices to raise community voices, engage community partners, and actively cede power to the nonprofits leading the work everyday.

PEAK In Community

Here’s the latest on how PEAK is actively engaging with the larger philanthropic community and leading the way in advancing effective, equitable, and values-centered grantmaking practices.

President and CEO Satonya Fair and Senior Communications Director Betsy Reid joined several hundred sector colleagues at Foundations on the Hill, the annual policy advocacy gathering hosted by United Philanthropy Forum (UPF) in partnership with the Council on Foundations and Independent Sector. Highlights included briefings on the current legislative landscape, an exploration of opportunities for philanthropy and philanthropy-supporting organizations to help drive equitable solutions for nonprofits and communities, and the opportunity to connect with fellow advocates from across the country. Read UPF’s event recap here.

To kick off 2023, the PEAK Membership and Community Engagement team has been busy reconnecting with volunteers and members. Clare Larson, senior membership manager, and Nichia McFarlane, member outreach coordinator, have conducted 20 virtual orientation meetings with members interested in connecting to their benefits, including private foundations, community foundations, and corporate grantmakers. Altinay Cortes, senior community engagement manager, Rafael Torres, peer group specialist, and Sara Sanders, membership and community engagement director, worked with the full staff team to host orientations for chapter volunteer leaders and peer group cochairs. In total, over 100 volunteers participated and we are excited to support our volunteers in hosting meaningful, Principles-based programming this year to support members in becoming change agents to transform philanthropy.

Rafael also attended Florida Philanthropic Network’s Annual Summit in Orlando where he connected with local grants management professionals during the Grants Managers Affinity Group. We look forward to future collaborations between the affinity group and PEAK Florida chapter.

Satonya and Programs and Knowledge Director Lita Ugarte Pardi participated in the final gathering of the Equitable Evaluation Initiative’s Equitable Evaluation Framework™ Peer2Peer Collaboratory. Over the past 12 months, the cohort met six times to have focused conversations about how each of the participating organizations is approaching the Equitable Evaluation Framework™ and to reflect, support, and learn from each other as each organization operationalizes the framework. As we reflect on the experience, we will incorporate our learnings into what we bring to our PEAK community.
