Gainesville Regional Utilities (GRU) is a multi-service utility that has been publicly owned by the people it serves for more than 100 years - and I am proud to be a customer!
This Friday, Alachua County's state legislators will decide if they are going to take away Gainesville's citizen-owned utility - without any input from the taxpayers who own it.
FL State Rep. Chuck Clemons drafted a bill that will allow Governor Ron DeSantis to appoint an independent board over GRU in place of the democratically elected city commissioners.
These appointees would have one ultimate mission: to be pawns of DeSantis in the hostile takeover of GRU and sell it off to one of the Florida GOP’s favorite campaign donors, Florida Power & Light. GRU makes up about 25% of the city's budget, so a takeover could essentially cause a municipal shutdown.
This is just another one of DeSantis' hijackings: public schools, higher education, Disney... and now publicly owned utilities. The Florida GOP & their power hungry Governor know absolutely no bounds.
Even if you don't live in Gainesville, we need your help.
Contact our legislators & let them know that you oppose this undemocratic takeover & if they're going to force it, to put it on the ballot for the people to decide!
