15 YEARS OF MEDIA DEFENCE
Unwavering focus on legal support for journalists

Media Defence was established 15 years ago. We have delivered crucial legal support to journalists under threat for their reporting since 2008. In that time, we have litigated over 1,300 cases in 116 countries.

Imagine a period of rapid technological change, accompanied by social, political and religious polarisation. Imagine a time when there are increasing attempts to limit what people are allowed to write or read; a time when governments and rulers identify critics and punish them by forcing them into exile, throwing them into jail or in some cases killing them. Media Defence is pleased to announce Carlos Gaio ([link removed]) as its new Chief Executive Officer. Carlos joined Media Defence in 2020 and has stepped in as CEO on 1st March 2023, replacing Alinda Vermeer. Prior to joining the organisation, Carlos worked for ten years as a senior lawyer at the Inter-American Court of Human Rights. We would like to thank Alinda Vermeer for the vital role she has played in Media Defence’s journey.

International Women's Day: Gladys Mbuyah
Gladys Mbuyah is a barrister and renowned human rights activist working in Cameroon. She has been part of Media Defence's network for several years having attended our digital rights litigation surgeries, and is currently part of our peer to peer support programme in sub-Saharan Africa.
