John, happy Women’s History Month!
It’s a time I use to appreciate all of the achievements and impact women have had throughout history. Women’s History Month reminds us to appreciate those contributions AND it reminds us that the work to achieve gender equality isn’t over.
Women’s History Month is also when I choose to reflect and appreciate the strong, herstory -making women in my own life, who serve as a constant source of inspiration and motivation in my work serving the City of Philadelphia.
My mother, Anita Green was a proud union public high school teacher for thirty-one years. In the 80’s, my mother went on strike with her fellow teachers to fight for better benefits — and won. She taught me the importance of not only investing in public schools, but also the importance of unions in helping workers provide for their families. She is also the truest example of never giving up on the things that matter — like making sure your family is afforded every opportunity they deserve.
My wife Sheila is not only my best friend but my partner in every sense of the word. Not only have we been married for 28 years this July, but in 2006 we became partners in business when we built a small business in Mt. Airy together from the ground up. And, most importantly, for the last 22 years, we’ve been partners in parenting, as we’ve raised our son Julian, who is becoming an incredible young man who faces obstacles head-on and succeeds. Julian has Autism, and so Sheila and I became partners in advocating for his every opportunity — just like my mom did for my family — starting the first Autism support class at Houston Elementary School for Julian and others like him and by supporting the Autism Speaks Philadelphia Walk and the Philadelphia Autism Project.
I know I wouldn’t be the man, father, and candidate I am today without these women and the immensely important role they play in my life and the life of others. And I know I’m not alone in feeling that way. I know that when we listen to, support, and advocate for women, we all are better for it.
So this month I’m asking you: Who are the important women in your life? And how can we uplift their voices?
— Derek
