What kind of society do we want to hand down to our children and grandchildren? And not just what kind of society, but what kind of lives?

Dear
Reader,
In this, my third and final email to you about our 2023 editorial priorities, I want to back up a bit. I’ve outlined some specific items, but what are the underlying questions that animate the conversations I have with my fellow editors and our contributors?
Here are two: What kind of society do we want to hand down to our children and grandchildren? And not just what kind of society, but what kind of lives?

As my friend J.D. Vance has pointed out, it’s striking how many of our most progressive government officials don’t have families of their own. Yet these same people are tasked with shaping the future of our country and its laws?
There is a better way, and it starts with people like you—people who care deeply about our nation and its future, but recognize that such things are ultimately not the “first things.”
Today, I hope you’ll join together with hundreds of these likeminded people—your fellow readers of FIRST THINGS—to invest more deeply in what we’re doing here at FIRST THINGS. It is a project of inestimable value, and we urgently need your support.

Rest assured: Our number is great, and growing. As we plunge headlong into an age of chiaroscuro, more will be drawn away from the darkness and toward the light . . . toward families with a mom and a dad, communities that care for each other, and schools that actually help their students learn.
This is the kind of society I want to hand down to my grandchildren. All of this, and more, is addressed in the pages of FIRST THINGS by the leading religious thinkers of our present moment.

When you do, make sure to write down in the Comments field what you see as our foremost editorial priorities in 2023. Thank you in advance for your support!
Yours,
