Samer* & Sama:* A love story
2013
Samer, 16, and his family, displaced by the Syrian crisis, arrived at the Zaatari Refugee Camp in Jordan, where they settled permanently.
2015
Sama, 17, another refugee at the camp, attended a Save the Children photography course. She produced a documentary about her struggles and the difficulties she faced, which was presented at the Sundance Film Festival.
2016
Samer also joined one of Save the Children's photography courses and discovered a new passion behind the lens, using the camera to capture all of life's little moments despite his circumstances.
During this course Samer's path crossed with Sama's, and they fell in love.
2023
Now, 10 years later, with a 3-year-old daughter and a second child on the way, the family strives to find time for each other in spite of the uncertainty that surrounds them.
Samer and Sama's story shows how something as simple as a photography course, designed to provide psychosocial support and a creative outlet, can mean finding a new passion and lifelong love. It is a testament to human resilience in the face of unimaginable hardship.
