Dear John,

As the debate over the debt ceiling continues, we continue to receive questions from activists like you about it and what you can do to ensure America returns to a path toward prosperity … instead of opportunity-crushing debt.

First and foremost, it is crucial to recognize that the debt ceiling is a symptom of a larger problem: the federal government's reckless spending habits and inability to budget.

For far too long, our government has spent more money than it takes in, resulting in a ballooning national debt that threatens to cripple our economy and burden future generations.

Instead of focusing solely on raising the debt ceiling, legislators should also address the root cause of the systemic problem of out-of-control government spending. This means legislators must make tough choices about where our tax dollars go and cut wasteful spending across the board.

I said this in The Hill op-ed pages last year ([link removed] ) , and I’ll say it again now: raising the debt ceiling without addressing spending and the broken budget process will only prolong the problem. A short-sighted “solution” like that just kicks the can down the road to a time the debt burden and its consequences will be even worse than it is now.

We cannot continue to live beyond our means and expect the consequences to magically disappear.

A fix requires real courage from members of both parties to recommit to an actual budget.

AFP's Agenda to End Budget Brinkmanship ([link removed] ) outlines steps Congress can take to reform the process that’s driving our debt disaster. I encourage you to read it and learn how you can get involved to hold your legislators accountable to real budgeting.

In conclusion, we should not be content with merely using the debt ceiling. We must focus on addressing the root cause of our debt problem through responsible spending and fiscal discipline. By taking a principled approach to this issue, we can work towards a future of opportunity and freedom.
