July news from UNHCR

Dear John,

This month, award-winning actor and UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador Cate Blanchett joined us on our Awake at Night podcast to talk about how her involvement with UNHCR has completely transformed her perception of human suffering and the capacity to hope. While the state of the world often keeps Cate awake at night, she’s confident that, by choosing hope and compassion, we can create a fairer world.

Inspired by Cate, we’ve gathered some fascinating refugee stories for you, including powerful words from South Sudanese poet Bigoa and Fadak’s experience of sharing food and culture with her childhood classmates. We’ll also reveal the most generous nations in the world – those that take in refugees who have lost everything. Keep reading to see if your country is one of them!

Bigoa’s family came to Australia 17 years ago, after fleeing war in what was then Sudan. In her powerful poem Birth Water, she discusses what home means to her and the experience of living between a dangerous past and an uncertain future as a refugee.
