Most U.S. residents live paycheck to paycheck, and nearly half don’t have enough cash to cover a $400 emergency expense.

Justice Democrats

John,

We need Democrats to do more to truly be the party of the working class.

Most U.S. residents live paycheck to paycheck, and nearly half don’t have enough cash to cover a $400 emergency expense. Growing up in Detroit as the daughter of immigrants, I’ve lived this myself, and I’ve seen this firsthand as a community activist working closely with my neighbors. But too many of my Democratic colleagues in Congress don’t understand this lived reality and don’t act with the urgency that our communities need.

For example, back in 2021, Congress passed a temporarily expanded Child Tax Credit, providing between $250-$300 per month per child for families with young children. This cut child poverty by 40%. But corporate Democrats and Republicans let that expire last year.

So I introduced the End Child Poverty Act, which would replace the Child Tax Credit and cover every child in the United States, including the lowest-wealth families who are traditionally left out of the tax credit system—because, ironically, they earn too little. It would cut child poverty by 70% by providing families with a universal benefit of nearly $400 per month per child, from children’s birth until their 19th birthday.

Poverty is due to policy choices. With more Democratic support for bold anti-poverty policies, we can help working class communities thrive.

Join me and Justice Democrats by signing the petition to demand that Democrats in Congress and the Biden administration do more to end poverty.

When the federal government gave people occasional one-time payments during the pandemic, it had a huge impact in people's lives. But the one-time payments were not enough.

To address our country’s economic crisis, we must urgently pass legislation that puts money directly back into people's pockets on a monthly basis.

I’ve introduced multiple bills to do just that, including the Building Our Opportunities to Survive and Thrive (BOOST) Act. If passed, the bill would provide people with recurring, monthly cash payments of up to $250 per month for individuals (if they earn under $50,000 in a year) and up to $500 per month for married couples (if they make under $100,000 in a year).

This would uplift almost half of all people living in poverty, including people who do not make enough to file taxes and who are too often left out of tax-credit-related government assistance.

In addition to transformative anti-poverty policies like this, we need federal action to eliminate debt—from education debt to medical debt to utility debt and more.

We live in the wealthiest nation in the world. We can pay for these changes by making the rich and corporations pay their fair share, by re-allocating money in the federal budget (i.e. from the Pentagon), and through my team’s innovative plan to #MintTheCoin.

It’s time for Democrats to live our values.

Sign the petition if you agree: We need massive Democratic support for bold, meaningful bills that invest directly in working class communities and meet the scale of our problems now.
