Right-wing propagandist Tucker Carlson started airing footage last week of the January 6th insurrection, which House Speaker Kevin McCarthy gifted to him exclusively.

And just as we anticipated, the footage was manipulated and selectively edited to fit the MAGA narrative that Fox News and Donald Trump want people to believe about January 6th.

Claiming that only a small number of people were violent — “hooligans” in Carlson’s framing — and the rest were peaceful is stunningly dishonest. We’ve all seen the footage of hundreds of people storming the U.S. Capitol, attacking Capitol Police, smashing windows, breaking through doors and causing enormous amounts of damage.

January 6th was an unprecedented attack on our democracy that attempted to stop the peaceful transfer of power.

Every single protester who was inside the Capitol on January 6th was behind police lines. Every single one of them contributed to police being overwhelmed, and helped delay the certification of the election. That’s what courts have ruled, that’s what the DOJ has asserted, that’s what we can see with our own eyes.

Tucker Carlson’s outrageous lies have been condemned by many members of Congress, but his prominence on Fox News, and the fact that he will likely continue to use this footage misleadingly, is incredibly dangerous.

Carlson’s portrayal of the attack on the Capitol is dishonest, and it is setting the stage for Trump and other orchestrators of January 6th to escape accountability — and potentially to incite similar violent attacks on democracy in the future.

We need to push back against Carlson’s distortions and downplaying of the insurrection, we have to drown out these lies with truth, and we have to make sure that insurrectionists are both held accountable and prevented from ever attacking our democracy again.
