Tell Congress: Banning TikTok violates our First Amendment rights.

ACLU Supporter –

Let's talk about the TikTok bans and what they mean for free speech.

We at the ACLU have been fighting back against the influx of bills trying to ban the social media platform TikTok for people across the United States.

We've been actively opposing the vague, overbroad, and unconstitutional bill that Republicans passed out of the House Foreign Affairs Committee last week. And now a bipartisan group of Senators has also introduced a problematic new bill that gives the government expansive new powers to decide what platforms we can and can't use, full stop.

Banning a social media platform used by so many Americans to express themselves and access information around the world would be immensely damaging to our rights to free speech and association. And it would do nothing to address the many companies that collect and misuse our private data.

Given the broad support these xenophobic bills are receiving right now, we need to make this as clear as possible, ACLU Supporter: Banning TikTok is not the solution. If anything, these bans lay the groundwork for excessive government control over the internet and violate our constitutional right to free expression. Please reach out to your member of Congress today and tell them to oppose the TikTok bans now.

ACLU Supporter, when the government controls what communication platforms we are allowed to access, it cuts us off from a worldwide flow of news, art, and diverse viewpoints. This is censorship in its purest form. The Senate bill that was just introduced grants the Secretary of Commerce new powers to ban us from using apps and products made in China and certain other countries, while also making it harder for us to challenge these actions in court. It even creates severe criminal penalties that could be used against people attempting to evade a TikTok ban.

The bottom line is: Banning TikTok would have massive implications for our constitutional right to free speech and free expression and we cannot allow these bills to pass. Tell Congress to vote these bans down now or else you will be taking your disapproval to the polls.
