John, my opponent David Schweikert gave an interview this week to the Fountain Hills Times. In it, he laid the groundwork for cutting Medicare and Social Security -- and claimed they are the main sources of our debt.

This is a shameful attempt by Schweikert to deceive Arizonans by ignoring the wildly irresponsible votes he has taken and blaming our problems on the programs that provide the earned benefits seniors rely on.

If you believe that every senior deserves to retire with dignity by being able to afford healthcare and a decent standard of living, please support my grassroots campaign to defeat Schweikert.

As reported by the Times:

He is a math geek who can explain the debt in terms not everyone will grasp. However, he can make it relatively simple in saying that entitlement programs are what drive the country's debt. Decisions made long ago to create Medicare and Social Security are the primary sources of debt today.

"Less than 30 percent of spending is discretionary and more than half of that is for defense," Schweikert said. "[These programs] are promises that were made; I'm optimistic there is a path [to reduce debt]."

Like a typical Washington politician, Schweikert fails to mention that he voted to increase the debt by $2 trillion in order to help his wealthy and special interest campaign donors save billions. Now he wants to force Arizona seniors to pay for it by cutting Medicare and Social Security.

He's reckless and wrong, calling them "entitlement programs" instead of what they really are - earned benefits. Arizonans need a Representative who will put our families' interests first, instead of doing the bidding of large corporations and the wealthiest Americans.

If elected to Congress, I will always fight to protect the Social Security and Medicare benefits that retirees have worked a lifetime to earn. I will put Arizonans first.
