Dear John,
All Knoxvillians want and deserve a comfortable, affordable, place to live. And yet, whether you’re looking to buy or rent, there’s never been a harder time to find a home in Knoxville. More and more people want to live here and Knoxville needs more housing – of all types and price points – for all types of families. The challenge is real and we are leading the charge to meet it.
Since taking office, my administration has worked diligently to preserve, restore, and grow Knoxville’s housing supply and to help families stay in their homes. Along with inventory, affordability is a barrier for many. To address this problem we created the Affordable Housing Fund, a 10-year, $50 Million investment in safe, high quality, affordable housing. This fund has already helped develop over 1,500 affordable housing units just since 2020.
This is just one of many strategies we have deployed to address our community’s housing needs. You can find more information about the City’s current plans and strategies around housing and neighborhood development, here. [[link removed]]
In the next four years, we will sharpen our focus on affordability. One initiative that I’m particularly excited about is the Transforming Western initiative, a project in the Beaumont - Western Heights community that understands that a healthy neighborhood needs a good housing mix, along with access to parks, grocery stores, high quality child care, and good jobs. I’ll share more about that effort soon!
Thank you for your support,
Indya
