Dem AGs Addressing the problems of the American Criminal Justice System
Friend,
Today we remember the life and legacy of a Black American whose life mattered, and who should be here with us today.
We’re proud to say her name: Breonna Taylor.
Breonna’s life was taken three years ago today in a case that is still developing, and one that still motivates us every single day to continue building a more perfect, and safe, country. From law enforcement’s use of questionable intel to obtain a search warrant for her apartment, to the lack of body camera footage available in the wake of her death — this tragedy exposed multiple glaring issues within the criminal justice system.
Following tragedies like Breonna’s death, we need solutions, not just empty platitudes. Actions must be taken to address systemic issues in the justice system — and our Democratic AGs have answered the call.
Dem AG Tish James immediately took action after Breonna’s death. She supported grand jury reforms and the release of grand jury evidence in the Breonna Taylor case along with former Dem AG and current Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear. In Nevada, AG Aaron Ford supported a bill restricting the use of no-knock warrants, and in North Carolina AG Josh Stein led a task force to reform his state’s criminal justice system.
Dem AGs have stepped up to fill a gap left by the Trump administration, whose actions further weakened the trust between law enforcement and the communities they’re sworn to protect and defend. Our AGs have worked across the entire spectrum of these problems, from helping heal and repair bonds of communication and trust that have been broken, to expanding pattern and practice investigations to help bring more accountability to policing.
Breonna Taylor’s life and name will go down in history – she’s a changemaker of our time who motivates Democratic AGs and people just like you to keep engaged in this important work. The work goes on every single day, and we’re proud of our AGs for being leaders in it.
Thanks,
Democratic AGs
