Dear NRDC Activist,
The endangered beluga whales, valuable commercial fisheries, and local communities of Cook Inlet, Alaska are poised to have their world upended by dangerous oil and gas development if, as expected, the Biden administration approves oil giant Hilcorp's lease in these pristine waters. The decision is expected any day.
It's simple: the fragile ecosystem of Cook Inlet can't withstand an oil spill — and Hilcorp has a terrifying track record of spills and violations. NRDC is in court right now fighting alongside partner organizations to protect Cook Inlet — but we urgently need your support.
A gift of just $5 today will help us mount the strongest possible defense against this latest assault on Alaska. Last March, we raised $100,000 to power our work. Help us beat that amount and we'll use those resources to protect the endangered Cook Inlet beluga whale and other wildlife, support local communities, and defend our environment in the most effective way possible.
Oil and gas development poses immeasurable risks to local ecosystems — like oil spills and dangerous noise from ship traffic — and would continue to drive devastating climate change by locking us further into the climate-destroying fossil fuels of the past for decades to come.
If Hilcorp's lease is not rejected by the Biden administration, the safety risks are very serious and put residents and wildlife in real danger. Their track record includes an onshore 8,000-gallon leak of slop oil.
NRDC and a coalition of local and national environmental groups has sued the Biden administration to halt drilling in Cook Inlet, Alaska and we will not back down from this fight — there's too much at stake.
But the threats don't stop with Cook Inlet. We're working to stop reckless industrial development in other parts of Alaska as well — including the Willow project, which would generate millions of metric tons of climate-busting carbon pollution, and Northern Dynasty's efforts to build an open-pit gold and copper mine at the headwaters of Bristol Bay.
Rush an emergency gift today to help power these critical fights for the future of Alaska and protect our environment on all fronts. We're trying to raise $100,000 before March 31, and even just $5 will have an impact, so please don't wait!
Thank you for your strong support of NRDC at this critical time.
Sincerely,
Valerie Cleland
