Under the new rule, migrants seeking asylum could be sent back to Mexico or the countries they came from — back to the dangerous conditions they were desperately trying to escape.
Asylum is a human right. Turning back asylum seekers goes against US law and international asylum standards. It puts migrants at risk of persecution, violence, and death.
We expect more from President Biden. We expect his administration to protect and uplift immigrant communities. And at a bare minimum, we expect him not to revive Trump-era policies targeting asylum seekers.
