John,
Three years ago today, the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a pandemic, officially marking an era of uncertainty and struggle as well as a public health crisis worldwide.
Millions of Americans unemployed, millions struggling with hunger, millions unable to afford rent, millions of children suddenly learning from home, and worst of all, over 100 million COVID-19 cases and 1 million deaths.
All of this made it abundantly clear: The government had a duty to respond and help the American people recover. So two years ago today, with President Biden at the helm, Democrats passed the American Rescue Plan.
This critical piece of legislation created a national vaccination plan, made necessary investments in schools and healthcare, delivered financial assistance to working families, extended and expanded unemployment insurance, provided support to small businesses, and helped state and local governments protect essential workers.
As part of the American Rescue Plan, Georgia received billions of dollars to help us recover from the pandemic. Here’s just a snapshot of some of the funding:
- $54.6 million to expand broadband internet access
- $500 million for emergency rural healthcare assistance
- $4.9 million to improve local healthcare facilities
- Over $2 million to improve access to COVID-19 vaccinations
- More than $10 million to support rural schools
The American Rescue Plan and the funding it made possible has helped our communities and will continue providing support to millions of Americans for years to come.
Thank you,
Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, Jr.
