I’m Toby Cain. I’m a Regional Political Director here at Pete for America. I work in the most rural parts of Iowa -- my adopted home for the last decade.
Seeing the rise of this campaign on the national stage has been surreal, but some of my favorite moments have happened in small communities that usually don't get much attention from Democratic candidates.
Rural Americans are ready for someone to show up and listen to them. Pete is doing that.

Before I had officially joined the campaign, I was volunteering at an event near my home in Northeast Iowa. We held a town hall in Elkader -- a town with a population of 1,273 people. Over a quarter of the town (that’s 400+ people) showed up on a Monday in the middle of the afternoon. Because for the first time in a while, folks from rural Iowa feel heard and valued by a candidate.
The Washington political mindset has left behind and excluded so many Americans, including folks and farmers in rural Iowa. But traveling around Iowa these last few months has taught me the power of compassion and belonging. Our campaign has fostered a community for people previously left behind by the political process.
We’ve worked diligently these last few months to reach as many voters as possible because this election isn’t just about a win, it’s about creating meaningful change for folks all across the country.
And Mayor Pete is not just talking about change. He is manifesting it. From Winterset to Centerville, we are building relationships that will exist long after the caucuses conclude. That's how we will win the era. From the ground up, with the help of every voter, no matter where they live.
