The rate of sea level rise has doubled in the past few decades — and if we don’t take sweeping climate action, some of our nation’s biggest cities will face serious impacts.
Last month, United Nations Secretary General António Guterres delivered sobering news when speaking with the U.N. Security Council: “Mega-cities on every continent will face serious impacts including Cairo, Lagos, Maputo, Bangkok, Dhaka, Jakarta, Mumbai, Shanghai, Copenhagen, London, Los Angeles, New York, Buenos Aires and Santiago.”
We’re not immune to sea level rise, John. Though Hurricane Sandy struck New York’s coastline nearly 11 years ago, New Yorkers are still recovering from the lingering scars of its aftermath — and based on the U.N.’s latest report, New York is even more vulnerable to storms of that magnitude.
Why?Because even a weaker storm will cause greater flooding if it starts on top of a higher sea level.
These rising sea levels aren’t just a threat to our environment, folks. Guterres also noted they pose an imminent threat to the 1 in 10 people who could be driven from their homes as a result of the subsequent disappearing coastlines.
John: The reality is people with lower incomes tend to live in areas most likely to be impacted by sea level rise. We’ve seen members of the GOP treat climate refugees from other countries like criminals instead of human beings who have lost their homes, and we know that when we have climate refugees from our own backyards, Republicans will give them the same treatment.
This fight isn’t just about our planet. It’s about protecting the 1 in 10 Americans who could lose their communities in the next 20 years. That’s why we need to make sure our Members have the resources they need to address this issue before it escalates past the point of no return.
