What is an Asylum Ban, and How Can We Stop it? 

The Biden administration proposed a new rule that would bar most migrants from being able to seek asylum if they did not seek asylum in a country through which they transited or based on how they entered. This is, essentially, an asylum ban, and an almost exact copy of a similar policy by the Trump administration.

Take Action to Defend Humanitarian Parole

20 states are currently suing the Biden administration to end the new humanitarian parole program, which allows up to 30,000 people a month from Venezuela, Nicaragua, Haiti, and Cuba to apply to live and work in the United States for up to two years. For those who are eligible, it eliminates the harrowing journey to the U.S.-Mexico border to seek asylum and, under Title 42, is the only option that many have to seek safety.

Speak Out Against Family Detention

We are appalled by reports that the Biden administration is considering bringing back the practice of detaining migrant families. This is horrifying, as the negative physiological impact on young children and families is well-documented.

Join us on the Next Solidarity Trip!

We are now accepting applications for our solidarity trip, which will take place on June 5th-June 10th, 2023! We will spend most of our time at the La 72 shelter in Tenosique, meeting with migrants and asylum seekers, as well as shelter staff and Mexican immigration officials. This week, we are featuring graphic designer and illustrator Susana Sanchez-Young, also known as the Designing Chica. Of Nicaraguan and Guatemalan descent, the Designing Chica is based in the Bay Area. She creates vibrant prints and adult coloring pages that honor her Latinx heritage and pop culture. Her designs and illustrations have been recognized by the Society of News Design and the Virginia, Michigan, Florida, New York and California Press Associations.
