NY Village Officials Not Above the Law:
Jewish Community Will Have Opportunity to Reclaim Their
Religious Freedom
A couple of days ago, we received some great news regarding our legal
case on behalf of an Orthodox Jewish day school in the Village of
Airmont, NY.
We're happy to report that a federal district court judge is
allowing First Liberty, along with our co-counsel, Whiteman Osterman
& Hanna LLP, to move forward with a lawsuit to stop ongoing
violations of our clients' constitutional rights.
Many of you who've been following this case closely know that
what's happening to the Jewish community in Airmont is one of
the worst cases of religious discrimination we've ever
encountered. In an effort to conceal more than 30 years of bigotry and
anti-Semitism, Airmont officials attempted to dismiss a critical
lawsuit that our legal team filed to hold the village and school
district accountable for discriminatory actions.
The recent decision means that we'll have an opportunity to move
forward towards trial, a victory in our continuing effort to ensure
that village officials won't be able to violate the law and the
Constitution. And of course, this is a very good sign for our clients,
who will get their day in court.
Like thousands of parents and people of faith across the country,
Orthodox Jewish families in Airmont simply want to send their children
to a school that teaches according to their faith. Sadly, Village of
Airmont officials have repeatedly weaponized zoning laws to prevent
the school from operating.
Even more appalling, the local school district has refused to provide
students at the Jewish day school with transportation and special
education services required by state law.
That's why the judge's decision in this case is so
important...and it couldn't have come at a better time,
especially considering that just last week the Trump administration
announced key policy initiatives to help ensure students of faith do
not face discrimination, censorship or retaliation because of their
beliefs.
Indeed, the fact that a federal judge did not allow village officials
to avoid accountability is a sign that our nation is on a strong path
to reclaim our First Freedom, particularly for vulnerable faith-based
groups and religious minorities such as the Jewish community in
Airmont.
America is built on the promise of religious liberty for those
oppressed and persecuted because of their faith. By reclaiming
religious liberty for the least among us, we're defending
religious liberty for all...and that has a huge impact for YOU to keep
living out your faith.
As our legal team prepares to present this case at trial, we need you
on the battlefront now more than ever...because when you stand with
us, we can be their greatest hope for victory.
Will YOU join First Liberty in the fight to protect the Jewish
community in Airmont, NY?
Please consider doing so by making a financial contribution today.
Yes, I will make a financial contribution today and help reclaim
religious liberty for the Jewish community and other religious
