March 2023

Dear John

In case you missed it, our interim CEO Tom Fyans appeared on last Sunday’s
episode of BBC Countryfile to talk about soil and how critical protecting our
agricultural land is for the nation’s food security – watch it from 25 minutes
onwards here

Last month saw over 3,500 of you cast your eyes to the sky and take part in Star
Count! A huge thank you for helping us track light pollution across the country
by counting the stars in the Orion constellation.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be crunching the numbers to create a map showing
where light pollution is most severe and where our darkest skies are. In the
meantime, we’d love it if you could email your MP
[[link removed]] to ask them to take action on light pollution - read on to find out more.

As we move through March, signs of spring are starting to appear despite winter
holding on in many parts of the country. Read on to discover what wildlife you
might expect to encounter in your local countryside or green space.

ASK YOUR MP TO STAND UP FOR STARRY SKIES
We’re expecting reviews of national planning policy this year and we need your
help to campaign for changes which lead to less light pollution and darker
skies. We need to show our MPs that acting to reduce light pollution and
increasing dark skies will be better for people, nature and the climate, and the
more who raise their voice in parliament, the more the government will have to
listen.

A BOOK FOR YOUNG STARGAZERS
Do you know any young stargazers who enjoyed Star Count and would like to learn
more about the importance of dark skies? If so, why not order a copy of our
children’s book, Gem and I? The story follows Gem as she discovers the wonder of
the night sky. It’s a magical bedtime read to inspire all ages. All profits go
towards CPRE's work to promote, enhance and protect the countryside we all love,
now and for future generations to come.

FEAR-MONGERING CLAIMS BY HOME BUILDERS FEDERATION
The Home Builders Federation has made fear-mongering claims that changes to
planning policy could lead to a huge slump in the number of homes built
annually. It's clear that we need to build more homes in the right place to help
address the housing crisis while protecting valuable green spaces. We believe
that giving local authorities more power will help to address this critical
national problem.

WRITE YOUR WILL FOR FREE
Did you know that more than half of UK adults don’t have a will? Throughout
March you can write your will for free with CPRE’s trusted partner Farewill
(worth £90). It takes as little as 30 minutes and ensures your loved ones are
protected. There is no obligation to leave a gift in your will with this
service. However, many supporters choose to remember CPRE as a way of letting
their love for the countryside live on into the future.
