This Women’s History Month, we’re paying special attention to the role women, especially Black women, have played in saving our democracy and standing at the forefront of our nation’s social justice movements.

More than two-thirds of Black women voted in 2020—the third highest rate of any race-gender group—stopping Trump from winning reelection and further eroding our democracy. In 2022, Black women showed up again for President Biden, mitigating the GOP’s red wave and delivering positive midterm results for Democrats.

Despite their outsized contributions to American democracy, women are desperately underrepresented in leadership. Did you know that only 3% of members of Congress have been women? That's just 378 women out of 12,506 members throughout the entire history of this country.

John, no matter what contributions women have made, we must remember that women are still fighting for their rights today. The Equal Rights Amendment hasn't been ratified, abortion rights are under attack across the country, and leadership positions are still overwhelmingly dominated by men.

Shontel Brown and her Democratic colleagues are committed to giving women the seats at the table they deserve. Shontel knows that when women succeed, our families, communities, and country succeed.
