Before my wife, Connie, agreed to our first date in 2003 – before she even met me – she needed to know just one thing: my voting record on reproductive rights and LGBTQ+ rights. Both had to be 100% – otherwise, no date.

Here we are 20 years later, and I am still fighting for both – especially at a time when these fundamental rights are under attack.

In our post-Roe world, GOP lawmakers from Texas to my home state of Ohio are doing everything in their power to restrict reproductive rights. More than a dozen GOP-led states have already banned abortion outright. 

Personally, I find it absurd and dangerous that any politician should have control over another person's personal health care decisions. And poll after poll shows that the majority of Americans agree.

I'll never waver in this fight to protect women’s freedom over their own bodies – but it's not a fight any one of us can win alone. With the GOP's attacks escalating, we've all got to keep speaking out as loud as possible.
