Elections—and votes—have consequences View in Browser Legislation Update Elections Have Consequences There was a lot of activity in the Michigan Legislature this week. It's another reminder to all that elections matter. CTV was actively involved in testifying, alerting our members and keeping your representatives accountable for their votes. We will continue to stand on the front lines fighting for your freedoms and letting you know how you can help. Legislature Repeals 1931 Abortion Ban This week, the Michigan House and Senate approved of a package of bills designed to repeal the 1931 abortion ban. CTV testified against these bills alongside other pro-life supporters. Unfortunately, this means women and children will suffer even more than before. Click here for more info. Two Republicans joined Democrats in repealing this abortion ban: Thomas Kuhn (Troy) and Donni Steele (Orion Twp). They are gravely mistaken in their votes. Integrity matters and votes should be made from a guiding set of principles—in this case, that life is sacred and should be protected at all costs, whether or not there are enough votes. Please take a moment to listen to Sen. McBroom’s statement from the Senate floor. He did a valiant job speaking against the repeal. Legislature Approves LGBTQ Expansion of Civil Rights Act The Michigan Legislature also approved the addition of "sexual orientation" and "gender identity and expression" as protected classes under the Elliott Larsen Civil Rights Act. CTV testified multiple times against this, asking for amendments to protect religious liberty for churches, schools, and people of faith. Unfortunately, it went through without these protections. The Governor is expected to sign it. Click here for more info. Valiant efforts were made to pass these crucial amendments. We want to extend a big thank you to Senator Runestad on the Senate Judiciary Committee and Andrew Fink as Minority Chair on the House Judiciary Committee, along with his GOP colleagues. They submitted several excellent amendments that would have preserved our religious freedoms. Despite these efforts, none made it out of committee or were approved in the final vote. Unfortunately, several Republicans voted for this bill without the needed amendments. This will not serve them well. Integrity and votes matter. This new statute can potentially be weaponized against anyone guided by deeply held religious beliefs. House Votes to Repeal "Right to Work" Law In a 56-53 vote, the Michigan House passed HB 4004 this week, a bill designed to repeal the Right to Work law. It now goes to the Senate. Why should you care? Because this law gave Michiganders the freedom to decide their involvement with unions. Reversing course on this will take that choice away, leaving workers with fewer options. Click here for more info. Stay tuned for updates from us as this bill goes to the Senate. Call your senator and let them know if you want to keep Right to Work alive in Michigan!
