Dear friends,
Today I’m saying farewell to my exceptional colleagues at Economic Liberties and returning to public service as a Special Advisor to Federal Trade Commission Chair Lina Khan. When I launched Economic Liberties three years ago with the support and encouragement of a small set of allies, our purpose was to extend the success of anti-monopoly thinking in the intellectual sphere into the governing realm — offering rigorous, actionable policy research, broadening the ranks of anti-monopoly leaders in state and federal government, and engaging in the day-to-day political battles required to elevate and empower our champions and to convert or marginalize our opponents.
Our initial team of five has grown to house 23 of the smartest and hardest-working people in politics. In three years, the team churned out an astonishing 70 policy papers, 130 op-eds, and more than 2,000 press hits to take advantage of news cycles and opportunities to advance policy change. Alongside dozens of partners, we’ve led coalition campaigns to break up corporations like Facebook and Ticketmaster, investigate insulin producers for collusion, ban “secret” state and local corporate tax subsidies, hold airlines accountable for consumer abuse, and prevent food delivery apps from ripping off independent restaurants. I’m incredibly proud of the creativity, speed, quality, and attention to distribution that characterizes this team’s work, and which has been essential to the Biden administration’s embrace of an anti-monopoly governing paradigm and the growing community of state and local leaders taking on corporate power.
Thank you so much to our partners who collaborated with us to pursue the strategies that we felt these critically important years required. Economic Liberties has benefited enormously from rich partnerships with all corners of civil society, and part of my new role at the FTC will be helping to institutionalize Chair Khan’s commitment to democratizing the agency through engagement with a broad and diverse set of stakeholders.
I’m excited to see our movement continue to grow, and so grateful to all of you for being a part of it.
Warmly,
Sarah Miller
Executive Director
