John,
In 1985, 25 women gathered in my basement, rolodexes in hand.
We had gathered to send letters to our friends, hoping to spread the word about our brand-new enterprise: a network to raise money for Democratic pro-choice women running for office. And that's how EMILYs List was born.
The very next year, in 1986, Sen. Barbara Mikulski (MD) -- one of our first two endorsed candidates -- became the first Democratic woman elected to the Senate in her own right.
EMILYs List has been involved in tough Senate races since the day we started -- and we're not slowing down. Our Save the Senate Fund, which is designed to set Senate women up for success all cycle long, ends tonight at midnight. Will you make a donation now to help elect more Democratic pro-choice women to the Senate in 2024 -- and beyond?

Since Sen. Mikulski's election, we've helped make history in the Senate time and time again -- with the support of this incredible community, which has grown from 25 friends in a basement to more than five million grassroots supporters all across the country.
In 1992, which became known as the Year of the Woman, EMILYs List helped elect four new women senators, quadrupling the number of women in the Senate (all of whom, at that time, were Democrats). EMILYs membership grew more than 600% that year, with more than 23,000 members contributing over $10.2 million.
In 1993, Sen. Carol Moseley Braun (IL) became the first African American woman elected to the U.S. Senate and the first woman to represent Illinois in the Senate. And here's a fact I love: that year, Sens. Moseley Braun and Mikulski broke the archaic prohibition on women wearing pants on the Senate floor.
In 2006, the victories of Sens. Amy Klobuchar (MN) and Claire McCaskill (MO) helped lead to the famous Democratic takeover of the Senate, thanks to dedicated supporters who helped us raise an incredible $46 million that year alone.
In 2012, we raised a record-breaking $51.2 million dollars, which helped elect nine women to the Senate -- including Sen. Tammy Baldwin (WI), who became the first openly LGBTQ+ senator in U.S. history.
In 2018, the first midterm race following Donald Trump's election, our candidates won the only two red-to-blue Senate flips of the cycle (this was also the year we took back the House and made Rep. Nancy Pelosi speaker once again!). These victories laid a critical foundation that allowed Democrats to take back the Senate in 2020 and hold it in 2022.
I'm proud to have founded and led such a groundbreaking organization. But I'm even prouder to have earned the trust and support of people like you, who have made our work and our victories possible for the past 38 years.
Now, we're kicking off a brand new election cycle, and we've got a chance to elect and reelect some amazing women to the Senate in 2024. Donate before midnight to be part of our Save the Senate fund, and help make even more history next November:
