Legislative Update

On Monday I stood up against the largest bonging bill package in Minnesota history. In a time when our state more than double the most recent peak budget surplus, the fact that the legislature wants to borrow even more money is unconscionable. There are some great projects in the bill, projects that are important for the future of Minnesota, but to borrow that much money when we have the cash available to fund these projects. This bill will cost taxpayers hundreds of millions in additional interest over the life of these bonds. This debt service will burden future legislatures and limit how much we can invest in the other responsibilities of government like our public schools. We have the money now and there are better uses for it.

This legislature is two months into session and we have not prioritized giving one single penny back to Minnesotans who funded this historic surplus. 8% inflation is pinching the budgets of every Minnesotan and yet when we have the resources to provide relief through a Social Security exemption and other tax cuts House Democrats are refusing to move on these proposals. I hope we will be able to bring them to their senses soon before our unreasonably high taxes scare more businesses and families away from our great state.

While I will always fight for tax relief I am also working on legislation to defend our motor vehicles from the various restrictions that Walz?s ?California Clean Cars? looks to ban. House File 1849 [ [link removed] ] states that a state agency can not adopt rules that prohibit the sales of any vehicles based on the type of fuel it uses. This will leave room for the free market to work and for consumers to make the choices that are best for their individual needs. Electric cars are great for some people, but other use cases require a powerful engine for towing, or more range than heavy batteries can provide. Everyone should be able to make these decisions for themselves and not be forced by some executive branch bureaucrat.
