In my role as president pro tempore of the United States Senate, I led an enrollment ceremony to sign the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) Implementation Act. This historic trade deal with Canada and Mexico will be a boon for American workers. It is now headed to President Trump's desk to become law. I was joined by many of my colleagues from states that will greatly benefit from USMCA, including Senator Ernst. You can find the full video of the ceremony here and the recap video here.

This week, President Trump successfully rolled back the harmful Obama-era “Waters of the United States” or “WOTUS” rule and replaced it with a workable rule that clearly defines what waters fall under federal jurisdiction. The President deserves credit for following through on his promise to repeal this rule that would have defined 97 percent of Iowa as a waterway. Giving the federal government the power to regulate nearly all of Iowa would have been an economic catastrophe. This new rule will help keep our water and land clean without destroying Iowa’s small businesses and family farming operations.

As part of my ongoing oversight work, I recently sent a letter to the Department of Defense Inspector General seeking an investigation into the manufacturing practices of Lockheed Martin’s C-130J aircraft. Multiple whistleblowers contacted my office with allegations that, until recently, Lockheed Martin was manufacturing integral fuel tanks for the C-130J cargo plane in a potentially unsafe and hazardous manner. Any and every contract with the American government needs to live up to the standards set out in law. It appears like the deficient oversight of this contract left American workers in the lurch while the taxpayer money kept flowing. Whatever the reason, we ought to know why the department failed to provide oversight and recommend corrective action in a timely manner.
