There’s nothing more fundamental to our democracy than the idea that every one of us should have a fair, equal say in our representation. But when partisan gerrymandering and voter suppression come into play, some votes count more than others.

North Carolina has seen the consequences of unfair legislative maps before — and courts have previously struck down extreme NC maps as a violation of our state Constitution. By allowing the legislators who draw maps to effectively choose their own voters, partisan gerrymandering strips the voters of their voice.

Just yesterday, the North Carolina Supreme Court DENIED an amicus brief from Gov. Cooper and Attorney General Josh Stein in the redistricting case. This is shocking even for them that they didn’t even want to hear what the two highest ranking Democrats had to say about their unprecedented rehearing of an already decided case. With each passing day, this partisan Supreme Court shows that it cares only about the views of Republican legislators. That comes at the cost of voting rights, school funding, and—ultimately—our democracy. 

John, Justices have no business doing the bidding of a political party, and North Carolinians deserve fair maps that give them a fair say.
