Dear John,
As the climate crisis grows daily, hard-line representatives in the U.S. House Natural Resources Committee are attempting to worsen it by passing risky legislation that would gut crucial environmental protections and peoples’ chance to weigh-in on crucial on public land decision-making.
This legislation would threaten meaningful public input processes critical in the fight to protect the Boundary Waters permanently .
As you’ve probably noticed (via so many of our emails over the years!), public input is vital to permanently protecting the Boundary Waters, and together our mobilization has been successful - and will remain so as long as we still have a voice in the matter:
Over the past five years, opportunities for public input on proposed sulfide-ore copper mining near the Boundary Waters have resulted in Americans submitting more than 675,000 comments supporting protections for the Boundary Waters Watershed.
On January 26th of this year, U.S. Interior Secretary Deb Haaland signed a Public Land Order that banned 225,504 acres of public lands located in the headwaters of the Boundary Waters from the federal mineral leasing program for 20 years.
All of these successes for our Wilderness were possible because of the overwhelming interest supporters like YOU sent to decision-makers in defense of our treasured Canoe County.
Don’t let our progress - particularly over the past two years - backslide. We’ve come too far in the quest for protecting the Boundary Waters.
At the hearing yesterday in the Committee, Rep. Stansbury from New Mexico - an original cosponsor of Rep. McCollums’ Boundary Waters bill, put a fine point on this anti-Wilderness legislation by saying that, “this is the largest piece of public land giveaway I've seen in text.”
In this critical moment in history, we need to defend our most visited Wilderness and the momentum toward permanent protection we’ve established. Join us and stand up for the Boundary Waters and fight to stop this massive public land giveaway and your right to have a say in government decisions about our public land - take action and send a message to Congress right now.
