selling off our oceans to big oil

BOEM must use its authority to reject "business as usual" oil
leasing and stop auctioning off our oceans at the cost of our
climate, ecosystems, and communities

Dear NRDC Activist,

The continued safety of beluga whales in Alaska may depend
on what happens next with the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management.

Lease Sale 258 in Cook Inlet, Alaska threatens the
well-being of protected species like the endangered Cook Inlet
beluga whale, valuable commercial fisheries, and residents of the
areas around Cook Inlet.

Oil and gas development creates countless risks — from oil
spills to dangerous noise and ship traffic. It's also driving
climate change. Alaska is already warming faster than any other
state in the country. And the effects are noticeable – extreme
weather events are more frequent, sea ice is melting, and
fisheries are closing as a result.

Alaska can't afford new oil development. We need to rally
public outcry before it's too late — can we count
on you?

Tell BOEM: Enough is enough. Reject "business as usual" oil
leasing in Alaska's Cook Inlet and elsewhere and reject Hilcorp's
bid to develop in Cook Inlet. ( [link removed] )

The people and wildlife in Cook Inlet deserve better.
That's why NRDC and a coalition of local and national
environmental groups sued the Biden Administration to stop this
leasing to the oil industry without first considering the
environmental harms that will result.

Two-thirds of Alaska's residents live in the Cook Inlet
watershed. Oil development in this area is reckless and
unnecessary — our current oil reserves supply more than enough
energy to meet our current needs, and there's increasing capacity
for solar and wind energy that can substitute where oil and gas
fall short.

The reality is that leasing our ocean to oil and gas
companies will only lock us into the climate-destroying fossil
fuels of the past for decades to come — exactly what the fossil
fuel industry wants — at a time when we need to be rapidly
transitioning to 100% clean energy to save our planet.
